pages lacking; diary begins May 9, 1853 and concludes with arrival at Ione Valley, Sept. 14. At the end of the diary is a
copy of an incomplete letter (Oct. 6, 1853) describing his journey. V.3 - five issues of the Philomatheon Gazette, a manuscript
newspaper compiled at Shaws Flat, Calif. (Nov. 1858-Mar. 1859).
